New York Travel Guide

04.15.18

As I’m sure many of you guys have guessed by now, a couple of weeks ago I went to New York to celebrate my younger sister getting married! We had a jam packed couple of days in New York and today I will be sharing with you all what we did in this New York Travel Guide.

We stayed in an airbnb in New Jersey, which when traveling with a baby was not a smart idea. Although you can find some very affordable and spacious airbnb’s in New Jersey. I think it is well worth the money to find a place in Manhattan instead. Finding a bus that went from Port Authority Bus Terminal was stressful and if you take a cab, Lyft or Uber, you will need to pay the toll to cross the bridge. So keep that in mind when planning your trip!

Starting the New York Travel Guide with day 1 with a lot of walking! On our way to lunch by By Chloe (an amazing vegan restaurant), we walked through Times Square. Oh, and if you are interested in vegan restaurants in New York, be sure to check out this post from last week! Times Square was jam packed with tons of people and had billboards everywhere!

After our lunch, we walked around the Rockefeller Centre  and checked out the huge Lego store in the area. We then walked to MoMa, which was one of the highlights of the trip for me. It has 5 floors and progressively each floor gets better and better. It definitely takes time to enjoy and appreciate the art at MoMa, so make sure to set aside 3-4 hours at least! After MoMa, we walked to Grand Central Station, which was absolutely breathtaking! You will definitely identify this Station from multiple movies. We ended day 1 at Madison Square Garden!

Day 2 of the New York Travel Guide: All the girls wore their I love TK shirts in honour of Takdeer getting married! I loved these shirts and was glad we got a chance to take a picture together with everyone wearing the shirts in Central Park. We took a few pictures here as the weather and park was beautiful that day. Once again, we spent the day walking a lot!

We then walked to The American Museum of Natural History, another highlight of the trip! This museum has an entrance fee of however much you want to pay and was amazing! Again, it takes a few hours at least to appreciate the museum so make sure to set aside enough time. We were a bit short of time so we did rush it, but were still able to go through all the floors. My favourite was the dinosaur skeletons. We ended the night by taking the Staten Island Ferry (which is free) and  saw the Statue of Liberty as the sun was setting. A great way to end the night for day 2!

Day 3 we started off in Brooklyn. We took the Subway across the bridge into Brooklyn and then walked across the bridge back into Manhattan. It takes 30-40 minutes to cross the bridge, but the time goes by fast. The bridge is packed full of tourists stopping to take pictures as they cross.

After we made it across the bridge, we made our way into Soho to check out some cool cafe’s and shops. The highlights for me were the Love Wall, Cha Cha Matcha, The Flour Shop (which is so beautiful on the inside), Sezane (again with a beautiful outdoor display), and Pietro Nolita! Sabon was this really cool body care shop we discovered and where almost everyone bought something. We had a nice dinner that night and then went home to relax before our final day of adventures.

On our last day, we woke up to several inches of snow! We decided to call a Lyft and take us to Port Authority Bus Terminal. We found a place nearby where we stored our luggage before we started our final day of adventure. Since we didn’t have any real plans for this day, we were pleasantly surprised by all the cool places we saw.

Penn Station was amazing! It has brilliant architecture and the inside of the building is absolutely stunning. Another highlight was the New York Times building. You can actually enter the building and browse around. We also visited the New York Public Library and it is breathtaking! It also has an amazing gift shop which is worth checking out as well. Finally, we said goodbye to Manhattan and headed to JFK. Along the way we had to stop by at the Gurdwara in Richmond Hill. It brought the trip to a wonderful end. I had an amazing time with all the girls and can’t wait to see them again in a month for my sister’s wedding! #NYCTAKSICAB

Best Vegan Restaurants New York City

04.08.18

New York City was a pretty unique experience, but my favourite part of the trip was all the amazing vegan we tried. So, today will be all about the best vegan restaurants New York has.

1. By Chloe.

NYC has 3 By Chloe. locations and we were able to visit 2 of them in our trip. By Chloe. is a 100% vegan restaurant that is so busy that you need to be quick to snag a seat as soon as a table becomes available. The food was so so delicious here and fairly affordable. I had the pesto pasta and burger during my 2 visits and they were equally amazing. They also offer a couple of condiments so make sure you take some chipotle mayo! It elevated the food to a whole other level. We really wanted to visit the Sweets by Chloe. location for dessert, but it was too far out of our way to visit. Maybe another time! Definitely one of the better vegan restaurants New York has to offer.

2. Terri

Terri was another amazing 100% vegan restaurant that was so good we came twice! They have 3 locations and we visited 2 of them on our trip. I tried their chickpea avocado wrap as well as their portobello panini, both of which were so delicious. However, the highlight of this restaurant was their Butterfinger shake! So so good, you need to give it a try!

3. PS Kitchen

We went to this restaurant for dinner one night and it was definitely the fanciest place we tried. It is a 100% vegan restaurant and it is quite formal and on the pricier side. The portions were small and the price tag was high. However, the customer service, quality and overall aesthetic was definitely well worth the price. Although the food was delicious, I would suggest trying some of the other restaurants I mention in this post, especially if you are on a budget.

4. Cinnamon Snail

Cinnamon Snail has multiple locations as well. We went to the location in the food plaza inside Madison Square Garden. I tried some tater tots and my sister had some mac and cheese that I also tried. All the food here is also completely vegan, however, the flavour was lacking in some of their dishes and I would not recommend this restaurant.

5. Peacefood Cafe

I have to say Peacefood Cafe was probably my favourite and best of the vegan restaurants New York had to offer. It was fairly closet to the American Museum of Natural History, so it was the perfect place to visit for lunch. Once again, it is a 100% vegan restaurant and it is quite busy. We had to wait a half hour before we got a seat.

During that time I tried their chocolate cake which was absolutely divine. All the other girls tried the cheesecake, which they couldn’t stop praising, making me think the chocolate cake I had was nothing compared to the cheesecake. I need to go back and try the cheesecake just so I know how good it actually was! When we got our table, we had such great customer service and the food itself was delicious. The food portions are huge compared to the price! I highly recommend this place if you are in New York City!

There were a couple other places we visited that although weren’t 100% vegan, but had vegan options. Sprinkles had an amazing vegan cupcake that my sister tried and Doughnut Plant had some amazing eggless as well as vegan donuts. There were also a couple of vegan juice places we tried some acai bowls and smoothies, however, I think they were just okay compared to places I’ve been to in Vancouver. Finally we also visited some coffee shops to warm up with a quick latte and take some pictures of the cute shops/cups. Coffee shops are always my favourite to visit!

5 After Work Snack Ideas

03.24.18

Almost a year ago I used to snack exclusively on chips and cookies when I came home after work. This was not the healthiest snack and after a while we committed to change this habit of ours and stop buying cookies and chips completely. But, we still needed something to snack on that tasted good, was quick to make and eat, but wasn’t terrible for our health. So, today I’ll share with you all my 5 after work snack ideas. They may not be the healthiest out there, but they are for sure healthier than chips and cookies!

1. Cheese and Crackers

Ever since Gursheel and I discovered the Boursin cheese brand, we have been hooked! We then found some crackers that don’t break easily and the Breton crackers brand is our favourite. We just take out a spreading knife and spread a bit of cheese on each cracker and devour! This is my favourite of the 5 after work snack ideas!

2. Nuts, seeds and dry fruit mix

We like to buy some pre-mixed nuts from Bulk Barn and the Hungry, Hungry, Hippie Trail Mix is our personal favourite. However, you can mix your own nuts, seeds, and dried fruits! This is the quickest of the 5 snacks ideas to prepare/eat since it is already prepared and ready to indulge!

3. Naan + Hummus

The Costco near us also carries ready made naans. We buy these and store them in the freezer until the afternoon snack attack hits. I just take it out of the freezer, brush it with some olive oil and sprinkle on some seasonings. My personal favourite is garlic powder with dried basil, and Gursheel prefers chipotle chilli powder with chilli flakes and salt. I then just place in the toaster oven for 5-10 min and then cut it into triangles. Serve this with some store bought hummus and you have the perfect snack.

4. Pierogies

A few months ago, Costco was having a sale on frozen pierogies (Pelmen Perogies), some of which were also vegan. So we went ahead and bought a few bags to try out and we fell in love. If you want to make pierogies from scratch, it requires a bit of effort, so frozen pierogies are perfect for the afternoon snack attack. There are a couple of different ways to cook frozen pierogies. The brand we bought says to bring a pot of water to boil and then cook the pierogies until they float to the top. We actually started brushing the pierogies with some olive oil and baking them at 400’F for 20 min, flipping once.

5 After Work Snack Ideas

5. Rice Crackers + Peanut Butter

This is another quick and easy one. Just buy some store bought rice crackers, we love the ones from Bulk Barn. And slather on some nut butter like peanut butter or almond butter. Most rice crackers are unflavoured, although you can buy flavoured ones. You can be creative and add anything your heart desires on the rice cracker, but my personal favourite is peanut butter.

Well there you have it! 5 After work snack ideas that are much healthier than chips and cookies. Although I do like to treat myself to chips and cookies everyone once in a while, I actually am starting to prefer these 5 snack ideas I share with you all today!
