My TIFF Experience – TIFF 2017 Review

09.16.17

Hey guys! I just watched my very first TIFF movie and I’m here to tell you all about my TIFF experience. I actually had a really good time but there are definitely things I learned that I thought I would share with you all today.

The Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) is the world’s largest publicly attended film festivals since anyone can attend and the tickets are reasonably priced – although I disagree (more about that later). At the festival, the public can attend lectures, discussions, workshops and most importantly screenings of movies that have yet to come out! TIFF starts after the labour day weekend and runs for 11 days. A lot of celebrities do come out to the festival as well so there is a chance you can meet your favourite celebrity. After you watch a movie at TIFF, you can vote for the People’s Choice Award. This award has predicted some Oscar winners in the past for movies like Slumdog Millionaire, La La Land, Silver Linings Playbook, among others, making it another reason for being super popular.

The movie that we chose to watch was The Mountain Between Us staring Kate Winslet and Idris Elba. We originally wanted to watch Victoria and Abdul however, the date we wanted to watch it was the premiere and tickets were $59/person! I can’t justify spending that much on a movie when I know I can watch it for 5 bucks on Tuesday night (if it comes out)! So, I tried finding a movie that looked good but was also a reasonable price. Most movies at TIFF have 3-4 different screening times, however, the ones on the weekend cost $35-$59, whereas the ones on weekends cost $18. So, we watched it on a weekday for $18/ticket.

We watched the movie at The Princess of Wales, although different movies play at different venues all around Toronto. I thoroughly enjoyed the movie, although the people I went with would disagree. I enjoyed it so much, that I actually voted for it for the People’s Choice Award. So, if it wins, and you guys watch it and don’t enjoy it, you may have me to blame! Hehe!

Anyways, after the movie, we walked around a bit and saw red carpets at several places, and were pretty close to see Halle Berry! There are different sponsors of TIFF, and we entered to win gas by Acura, had some lemonade from Pure Leaf Canada, and also took some pictures on these swings decorated with fresh flowers.

To make my TIFF experience oh so special, I was hoping to run into Idris Elba. Since another reason I chose the movie was because I really do like him, especially in the show Luther! I didn’t 🙁 OH WELL, there is always next year!

We went for dinner after at the District Eatery, a place with a ton of vegan options, although I didn’t enjoy what I ordered (the nachos) and went for dessert at this ice cream place called Sweet Jesus which was SO GOOD! Highly recommend!

Overall, I really did enjoy my TIFF experience! It was a fun day 🙂
