Donut Themed Bridal Shower with Donut Cake

06.23.18

I’ve been sharing the DIY favours I made for my sisters donut themed bridal shower (sprinkles and chocolate bars) and today I’m back with pictures from the actual shower! We had the bridal shower at Deep Cove on a nice hot day in May, so hot that the amazing donut cake we had started to melt! It was an amazing day and I can’t wait to share with you the details put together by my good friend (and food editor) Manpreet from Simply Sophie Decor!

Just a quick heads up: I took all the pictures (not Gursheel) and therefore they are not the best. He did edit them for me to make them look a lot better than what they were. Also, it was quite windy that day and the balloons just did not sit still to get a good shot. But everything was beautiful! As people walked by they kept saying how beautiful everything looked and how insta worthy it is! I really wish I was able to capture the true beauty of the bridal shower.

Okay, now on to the donut themed bridal shower. My sister Takdeer LOVES anything pink and especially loves donuts. Along with the fact that she loves fun, we thought a donut themed pool party would be the perfect theme for her bridal shower. Originally I wanted to have this party at a pool but those are so hard to rent out! So we decided outdoors, near the water at Deep Cove. I was imagining having a bunch of donut floaties in the pool as we floated in them and just relaxed! This worked perfectly though, no one wanted to get wet so some people just lay in the donut floatie on the grass (by some people, I mean just Takdeer, hahaha).

We had the bridal shower on the grassy part near the water. We just laid down some white fabric and had these really cool tables from our friend that are actually lawn chairs! By adding some tablecloth and a table runner, you have the perfect setup. The food was absolutely delicious and was made by friends and family. We had some really cool donut themed plates, straws, napkins to complete the look.

We had one main table where we served drinks (lemonade was essential this day), displayed the favours, donut shaped cookies, donut cake and the super cool donut peg board made by Parveen from Citrus Hues! She also did amazing calligraphy for different signs, my favourite being the refreshments one! Manpreet also had this really cool idea to have fresh flowers and put them into milk jars with some milk and it looked so beautiful!

We also had games, and my favourite was definitely the classic toilet paper dress game. However, we had a little spin to the classic game and used dollar store finds instead of toilet paper and the dresses were so cool! We also had Takdeer knock down a donut shaped piñata, just because we found a donut piñata and just had to use it. It was fun watching her struggle! Haha!

I had such a great time that day and will definitely look back onto how beautiful everything was. The hardest part was lugging everything back into the cars after the party was over, especially in the intense heat. The donut cake had a hard time too, it melted near the end!

I will link all the vendors and supplies used for this donut themed bridal shower down below! Hope you enjoyed this post and let’s have a moment of appreciation for that amazing donut cake 😛

Vegetarian 7 Layer Dip – Perfect for Summer Picnics

06.21.18

This past weekend we were invited to a BBQ and I wanted to use it as an opportunity to make one of the many recipes I’ve pinned on Pinterest, because I’m the person that always pins but never ends up making any of the food. I wanted to make something that was easy to eat, mess free, visually appealing and of course delicious. This vegetarian 7 layer dip was perfect! I bought some nice plastic cups from the dollar store (they are actually wine glasses), and they worked perfectly for the dip. I wanted to make sure that the Tostitos would fit into the cup and this was a perfect size. For those that prefer, you can eat the dip with a spoon as well.

I always wondered why this was called a vegetarian 7 layer dip, because I couldn’t figure out what the 7th layer was. I mean we have refried beans, guacamole, sour cream, salsa, veggies and cheese. But this only makes 6 layers. I guess the veggies can be divided into 2 layers. Hmmm…

For the refried beans layer, I microwaved the beans for a minute and mixed in Taco seasoning. If it is too thick, add in a little bit of water to make it into a smoother, workable consistency. Also, I want to try making my own Taco seasoning one day because I’m not sure if this is the healthiest.

I looooveee guacamole!!! And avocados are so photogenic. I remember as a kid I HATED avocados, but now they are one of my favourite foods!

When adding the different layers into the cups, it can get messy. At first I considered wiping down the sides of the cups before adding the next layer but I think the ‘messiness’ gives the dip cups a more homemade, authentic feel.

These were so delicious and even easier to prepare. It’s definitely a quick, easy and delicious BBQ/picnic food!

INGREDIENTS – Vegetarian 7 layer dip

1 can refried beans

3 avocadoes, mashed

1 container sour cream

1 package cheese

1/2 can sliced black olives

1 jar salsa

2 tomatoes, chopped

1 green bell pepper, chopped

DIRECTIONS

The directions couldn’t be any simpler. Once you have prepared all the ingredients, all you have to do is layer the ingredients for the vegetarian 7 layer dip. I placed refried beans mixed with taco seasoning on the bottom. Next went the guacamole, then the sour cream and salsa. Finally I added the cheese and veggies.

Hope this makes the perfect addition to your next summer picnic and if you are looking for more ideas for picnic foods check out this amazing salad recipe!

Ideas for Healthy and Green Living – Guest Post by Emma Joyce

06.16.18

Hi friends! Today I have an amazing blog post for you that is written by Emma B. Joyce on ideas for healthy and green living. I am so excited for this post because Emma gives some really great tips. I hope you enjoy this post and keep your eyes peeled for even more ways you can start healthy and green living!

Ideas for Healthy and Green Living

There are a lot of things you can do in order to protect the environment and create a better future for your children. Firstly, you need to start thinking small and making a change in your own home, making it more sustainable. Also, you need to think about your daily habits – soon enough, you’ll learn that even the smallest of changes in your routine can transform your life and make it greener. To achieve that, you need to follow a few simple rules and learn what you can give back to the nature. It’s not that hard to make this choice and stay on the right track, you just need to be willing to make an effort. Here are some examples of how you can live healthily and be more satisfied with the changes that are beneficial to the environment.

Opt for minimal

You’ve probably heard many times that less is actually more, and this should be your home design motto as well. For example, it’s better to remove the clutter and leave only those things you’ll definitely use. That will come in handy in so many ways, starting with making cleaning and organizing easier. Many trendsetters are fans of this style and they all like to point out the beauty of a functional and beautiful home. So, go through every room twice and evaluate your belongings – you’ll find so many things you can donate or sell at a garage sale. This will allow you to declutter your home, which will play a significant role in relieving stress. Keep in mind that it’s always better to let go of something and let it find its way to a new owner.

Don’t forget the garden

Having green and organized garden is something you don’t immediately think of when you want to transition to a healthy lifestyle, but just imagine all the exterior space you can use in so many ways. Many Aussies know that spending time with the family is what feeds you with energy, so they like to be outdoors and enjoy. This is why many Australian families hire companies like Manna Landscapes to help them create the best design for their gardens. Having a fully functional garden and backyard is a great way to spend time together, play family games, enjoy fresh air and hang out in the open.

Recycle and reuse

A key component of green living is finding different uses for the things you own without spending money on buying new pieces. This goes for even the smallest items like your decorative elements, so rearrange them – what you don’t like in one room can now be a breath of fresh air in another. Apart from that, start recycling everything you definitely don’t need: furniture, electronics and even clothes. This also means to dividing the trash and separating the plastic, paper and glass. Bring that to your local recycling center and you can use the money for small repairs at your home.

Use natural elements

If you find yourself in need of something new, be sure it’s made out of natural materials. Don’t worry – you’ll have a wide choice for almost anything you need and you can be creative and play with the design. Wood is the first choice, so go a step further and find products from recycled wood as these are much cheaper. When it comes to materials, always check the labels and see the composition: this particularly goes for new clothes you can always buy on sales. There are also a variety of rugs, beddings, clothes and much more you can find in stores that support a sustainable way of life. New trends all have natural materials included in their trendy picks, so if you’re a fashionista, this is another reason to make this transition.

Lastly, don’t forget to add a few plants to your home and enjoy having a piece of outdoors in the comfort of living space. Completely changing your life is never an easy task, but if you have a positive mindset, you can do this without even noticing. Soon enough, you’ll see the difference in the quality of life and teach everyone around you a valuable lesson.
