Cafe Cancan Review

10.21.17

I love finding cool places to check out and if there is food involved, there is nothing stopping me from going. Cafe Cancan in Toronto is a cute little restaurant I visited recently and today I am going to do a short Cafe Cancan review for y’all.

Cafe Cancan Review

If you love pink you are going to fall in love with this place because Cafe Cancan has the best decor I ever did see. There is pink everywhere with amazing finishing touches. The decorator, Tiffany Pratt, is hands down amazing. From the floral wallpaper to the detailing on the dish ware, you will be in awe with everything that you see. It is an amazing place to take awesome shots with your family or friends, or whoever else you go with.

In terms of food, Cafe Cancan was slightly disappointing. You would think with steep prices that the food would be tasty with decent portion sizes. It was not. I had to order something that was eggless so I went for the heirloom tomatoes on toast and a caramel and sea salt chocolate bar. It was literally a chocolate bar served on a plate and cost 8 dollars. The tomatoes on toast was the tiniest piece of bread with only 3 tomatoes on it with lots of oil and salt. Not yummy and definitely not filling. We also ordered a latte and although the latte art was beautiful, the size and taste of the latte was disappointing. For a stylish cafe with steep prices, one would think the quality of food be on a higher level.

However, the bigger disappointment was the service. Cafe Cancan is a very busy restaurant so many people book a table ahead of time. Luckily we got a table right away, although the server said we had 45 minutes until we had to move. This was less than ideal since the food literally took a half hour to arrive. By the time we finished drinking our lattes and eating our chocolate bar, the toast we ordered still hadn’t arrived. At the half hour mark, I lost my patience and asked the server to see if it was coming. She had completely forgotten about it so I waited another 10 minutes for it to arrive.

Although the food and service at Cafe Cancan is not something I would recommend, I would definitely suggest checking out the Cafe for just its decor because the beautiful pastel decor alone is inspiring.

I hope you found this Cafe Cancan review useful and if you do decide to visit Cafe Cancan let me know in the comments below what your experience was like. And if you’re looking for more things to do in Toronto, check out my post on 5 Things to do in Parkdale Toronto.

Eggless Buttermilk Scones Recipe

10.17.17

A couple of weeks ago, Gursheel and I went to Milton and randomly went to this cafe to grab something to eat. Usually, most pastries at cafe’s have egg, however, this cafe had eggless buttermilk scones. We got them heated up and spread some butter on and they were the perfect complement to our chai tea latte.

Gursheel actually had never had a scone before and he was amazed by them so much so that he said we gotta make this at home. So, I got to work and searched for vegan scone recipes online, since we try to make as much as we can vegan. However, all the recipes I found online made me think the scones would come out dry. So I decided to use buttermilk and make this an eggless recipe instead before I try to make a vegan version.

I actually used to work at a coffee shop and we made scones using buttermilk that were so delicious! The lemon poppy seed flavour was my favourite. I think the buttermilk was key in making them fluffy and not dry.

When we made these scones at the coffee shop I worked at, we used a pre-mixed dry ingredient mix and just added in the buttermilk. So, instead of looking to see if I can find scone dry mix online, I searched for an eggless buttermilk scones recipe online. And I found the perfect one! This buttermilk scones recipe is so good!! I found this recipe on a blog called bakedbyanintrovert and I am just in love with this blog and it’s amazing name! The scones came out so fluffy and buttery! However, in my first attempt I used frozen blueberries and after baking my scones were literally blue/green. Not very photogenic.

So, I made them again. This time I mixed in cranberries and walnuts to make them fit the season and they came out looking amazing and tasting delicious!

So, in today’s recipe, I will share with you all an eggless buttermilk scones recipe, that, unfortunately is not vegan. Although, my next challenge is to attempt a vegan version. However, this recipe is super easy and super delicious!

INGREDIENTS

2 and 3/4 cup all purpose flour

1/2 tsp baking soda

1/3 cup sugar

1/2 tsp salt

1 tbsp baking powder

1/2 cup walnuts, chopped

1/2 cup cranberries

1 tbsp vanilla extract

1/2 cup cold unsalted butter, cut into pieces

1 cup buttermilk

DIRECTIONS

In a bowl, mix the flour, sugar, baking powder, baking soda and salt.

Using a potato masher (or a pastry blender if you have one), mash the butter into the flour. You want to keep the butter as cold as you can, so it’s not ideal to use your hands.

Now add in the cranberries and walnuts as well as the vanilla and buttermilk.

Mix the dough as best you can using a fork, then proceed to your hands and knead it into a smooth dough. The dough should be moist but not too wet. The less you mix the better as over-mixing can cause a tough dough.

Portion out the dough into equally sized pieces. I had a total of 8 scones. You can create triangles or any shape you like, but I just stuck with a ball.

Bake at 350’F for 20-25 min. Let cool on a wire rack.

Serve warm with some butter on the side and a cup of tea!

Hope you all enjoyed this eggless buttermilk scones recipe and comment below if you try it!

Andrew’s Scenic Acres Day Trip – Flower and Berry Picking

10.07.17

Fall is here but Toronto has been having some very unusual weather. I’m not complaining because I got the chance to go to Andrew’s Scenic Acres and take pictures with these beautiful flowers. I love nature, and I especially love flowers. So, when I found this amazing farm that let’s you walk in a field of flowers and pick any flower you like, I just had to visit. One would think there would’t be flowers in October, but…

There’s a field of them over at Halton Hills in Ontario!

Andrew's Scenic Acres Toronto

Andrew’s Scenic Acres is this amazing farm and farm market that is surprisingly not as popular as some of the other farms out there. I’m not complaining because I spent a peaceful weekend at this farm, taking in the nature, the flowers, and the berries!

At Andrew’s Scenic Acres, you just pay a $5 entrance fee, and if you go on a weekday, it’s absolutely free. Once you enter, you will see this beautiful field of flowers, in which you can walk and take pictures AND pick some flowers just 80 cents a stem.

They also have blueberry and raspberry fields, and you can pick your own berries for $4.25 a pound! We picked raspberries and after working hard for a half hour, we didn’t even pick a pound! But these raspberries tasted so fresh and delicious!

If you’re looking for something unique and outdoors-y to do with your family this long weekend, check out Andrew’s Scenic Acres and you won’t be disappointed. They even have a market, so grab some fresh pie on your way out!
